With thousands of us having made plans to head off to one of the UK's numerous music festivals this year, revellers need to ensure their possessions are covered in case of loss, theft or damage. Find out how to make sure your belongings are insured
Whether you’re heading to the Isle of Wight festival this weekend, or have bought tickets for Glastonbury, Reading or one of the other many music festivals this summer, price comparison site moneysupermarket.com urges festival-goers to ensure their possessions are covered while they’re away from home this summer – and it won’t cost them that much to do so.
get protection
“Festivals are a hub of activity in the summer months and unfortunately that means an opportunity for thieves to prey on unsuspecting Brits,” according to Steve Sweeney, head of home insurance at moneysupermarket.com. “Tents can be left unguarded for hours at a time, so while it’s essential not to leave valuables lying around, it is also important to check your insurance will cover you if necessary.”
Read the small print
With police at Glastonbury reporting a 50% rise in theft last year compared to the previous year, it’s definitely worth checking to ensure your possessions are properly covered.
Many household insurance policies will allow you to tag cover for personal possessions while you’re away onto your household insurance for a small cost. For example, Barclaycard home contents insurance costs £69 but for an extra £30 up to £1,000 worth of personal possessions could also be covered when you’re away from home.
Do make sure you check exclusions on your policy though. Some insurers insist that camping equipment is listed separately while others, such as American Express, won’t cover items left in an unsecured tent.
